Send In The (2nd Generation) Droids
June 22, 2011: After more than six years of development, the U.S. Army is issuing 48 production model XM1216 SUGV (Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle) robots to a combat unit. SUGV is the next generation infantry droid. This is a 13 kg (29 pound) robot, similar to the slightly larger Packbot.

Extremely poor range,
I purchased these for a car caravan summer trip in 2008 where we would not have the use of cell phones due to some of the remote locations out in the western U.S. The claim of a range of 28 miles is absolutely ridiculous. Typically 1 watt = 1 mile under good conditions. I figured that even if I got ¼ of that range it would still be good, it was not. We have very poor communications car to car even when we were 200 feet apart. Broken and dropped transmissions not to mention poor battery life (even when I charged them every night in the hotel). I’m not sure how Uniden is getting away with the performance claims on this product. I was sorely disappointed with these and I’m a Uniden fan and have been for years.

|Good value for money,
We have purchased more than a dozen of the Uniden GMR2889-2CK (2-pack) radios for use at a hotel in Central America. The radios are used heavily and daily by hotel staff including our security people who value the privacy code feature.
We are in a semi-tropical climate where humidity is high and where there are heavy rains during part of the year. These radios hold up well with constant exposure to these conditions. Battery life is good and the radios work well both within and without the 50 individual villas and other buildings on the property. We also use these radios for off-property communications in the hilly countryside around the hotel. The radios perform well in this terrain also.
I recommend the Uniden radios as good value for the price.Uniden GMR2889-2CK 2-Way 28 Mile 2 Pack GMRS/FRS Radio with Dual Charger

|Good call,
I just bought these for some snowboarding in Colorado. 9 of us went out there and were spread out all over the mountain. My radios were never out of contact and were always able to make a call. Also, I should note that we used them all day and they never ran out of battery as long as I charged them at night.
My only gripe is that the belt clip is too lose for extreme sports, so I had to put it on my jacket.
Great radios, glad I bought them.
